Sea lice infestation is the most significant welfare challenge in salmon farming, and the methods used to control lice cause significant additional stress and injury to already compromised fish.
Sea lice in salmon farming create a double welfare burden: the lice themselves cause chronic irritation, tissue damage, and immune stress, while the treatments used to control them cause additional acute suffering. Mechanical delousing by warm water, freshwater immersion, or thermal shock causes scale loss, gill damage, fin erosion, and mortality. Chemical treatments are stressful and increasingly ineffective. Selective breeding for lice resistance, biological control through cleaner fish, and ultimately closed containment systems that eliminate lice exposure altogether are the welfare-focused long-term solutions.
