Japanese quail are farmed intensively for eggs and meat in highly confined battery systems, with their welfare receiving far less regulatory and research attention than chickens or turkeys.
Quail welfare receives less attention than chicken welfare despite similar problems in intensive production. Battery cage confinement prevents natural foraging, dust bathing, and hiding behaviors. As small prey birds, quail have particularly strong fear responses in exposed environments, and high-density systems with no cover create chronic stress. Feather pecking and cannibalism reflect this fear and frustration. Litter-based systems that allow dust bathing and provide cover substantially improve quail welfare. Consumer demand for higher-welfare quail products is one of the most effective ways to drive improvement in this overlooked sector.
