Tortoise welfare is frequently compromised by underestimation of their environmental needs and lifespan. These animals are not low-maintenance — they require outdoor access, UV-B provision, appropriate hibernation management, and species-correct diet across a lifetime that may span a century. Indoor-only tortoises kept without quality UV-B lighting develop metabolic bone disease, soft shells, and skeletal deformities that cause chronic pain. Hibernation mismanagement causes death from dehydration or starvation. Researching species-specific needs thoroughly before acquisition and providing lifelong appropriate care are the foundations of tortoise welfare.
