Cultivated meat — grown from animal cells without slaughter — offers significant potential to reduce farmed animal suffering, but the path from laboratory to commercial scale involves complex welfare and ethical considerations.
Cultivated meat represents a potential paradigm shift for animal welfare — the decoupling of meat consumption from animal suffering at scale. If the technology reaches price parity, it could reduce farm animal suffering by many orders of magnitude. However, current production challenges including fetal bovine serum use represent a real welfare cost in the development phase. Transition to animal-free growth media is essential for cultivated meat to fulfill its welfare promise. Consumer acceptance, regulatory frameworks, and continued investment in production efficiency will determine whether and how quickly this promise is realized.
