Reactive dogs who bark, lunge, or aggress on leash are often misunderstood. Their behavior typically stems from fear and anxiety, and appropriate training significantly improves welfare.
Reactive dogs experience significant emotional distress during triggering situations. Their aggression is often a response to fear or the frustration of leash restraint. Punishing this behavior increases stress and can escalate aggression. Positive training approaches using systematic desensitization — gradually increasing exposure to triggers below the reaction threshold — and counter-conditioning — pairing triggers with positive experiences — reliably reduce reactivity and improve dog welfare. Managing the environment to prevent trigger exposure during training also reduces welfare harm.
