Welfare Considerations

Water access is perhaps the most fundamental behavioral need of farmed ducks that is routinely denied in intensive production. Without water, ducks cannot clean their eyes, nostrils, or plumage — causing eye lesions, respiratory problems, and feather damage. They show repeated, frustrated attempts to access water through empty drinking nipples. Even basic shower or trough systems dramatically improve welfare compared to nipple-only provision. Full pond access provides the most complete expression of natural water-related behavior.
