Sea lice are the primary disease challenge in Atlantic salmon farming. Treatment methods vary enormously in their welfare impacts, making treatment choice a significant welfare decision.
Sea lice treatment methods span a wide welfare spectrum. Handling fish for chemical bath treatments causes significant stress through crowding, air exposure, and the treatment process itself. Mechanical and thermal treatments can cause skin damage and thermal injury if improperly calibrated. Biological control using wrasse and lumpfish cleaner fish reduces treatment frequency and avoids direct stress — but raises welfare questions about the cleaner fish themselves. Vaccine development and selective breeding for lice resistance represent the most promising long-term welfare improvements.
