Hamsters are among the most commonly mistreated small pets. Most standard hamster cages fail to meet their basic behavioral needs, causing chronic welfare harm.
Hamster welfare is one of the most commonly neglected areas of small pet care. Standard pet store cages are typically far too small for hamsters to express normal locomotion and foraging behavior. Without adequate running space, deep burrowing substrate, and hiding opportunities, hamsters develop stereotypic behaviors — repetitive bar-chewing or backflipping — indicating chronic frustration and stress. Providing a minimum of 1 square meter of floor space, 30 cm of burrowing substrate, and a properly sized wheel dramatically improves hamster welfare.
