Cheetah cub trafficking causes enormous welfare harm at every stage. Cubs are taken from mothers — traumatic for both — and transported in cramped, dark containers with high mortality. Survivors experience chronic stress in captivity without appropriate socialization. Cubs raised as pets cannot be released — they lack fear of humans and wild survival skills. Rescued trafficked cubs often develop stereotypic behaviors, immune problems, and psychological abnormalities from early trauma. Addressing demand in destination markets is the most effective welfare intervention in this supply chain.
