Cubicle (free stall) housing is the dominant system for dairy cows in many countries. Design quality profoundly affects lying behavior, lameness, and overall welfare.
Cubicle housing welfare depends critically on design quality. Cubicles that are too small, poorly positioned, or have uncomfortable surfaces cause cows to reduce lying time below welfare thresholds, stand excessively, and develop leg and foot problems. Well-designed cubicles with deep sand or foam-topped mattresses, appropriate dimensions, and comfortable neck rail positioning allow cows to lie down fully and comfortably, rising and lying without injury. The economic case for good cubicle design is strong — better-rested cows have higher milk yields and lower veterinary costs — supporting the welfare case.
