Proboscis monkeys are endemic to Borneo and critically threatened by deforestation. Their welfare and survival depend on the survival of coastal and riverine forest habitats.
Proboscis monkey welfare is threatened by the rapid conversion of Borneo's coastal forests to oil palm plantations and shrimp ponds. Animals displaced by deforestation enter forest fragments too small to support their dietary needs, leading to nutritional stress and starvation. They become vulnerable to hunting when forced into contact with humans. Their inability to survive in degraded forest makes habitat protection the only viable welfare intervention. Supporting deforestation-free palm oil certification and reducing palm oil consumption are direct actions that protect proboscis monkey habitat and welfare.
