Macaroni penguin welfare depends on the availability of prey within commuting distance of colonies. When krill is depleted by commercial harvesting near breeding sites, adults must travel further to feed, returning less frequently to hungry chicks. Extended absences cause chick weight loss, vulnerability, and mortality. This is a welfare harm caused by industrial competition for a shared food source. Marine protected areas that restrict fishing within penguin foraging range directly benefit penguin welfare by maintaining prey availability. Certification of krill products that excludes critical penguin feeding zones is a meaningful consumer lever.
