Axolotls are popular aquarium animals but are critically endangered in the wild. Their welfare in captivity requires specific water conditions and appropriate care.
Captive axolotl welfare is frequently compromised by inadequate temperature management and water quality. Axolotls are cold-water species stressed by temperatures above 20 degrees Celsius — a common failure in tropical or room-temperature aquariums. Chronic thermal stress suppresses immune function and causes behavioral abnormalities. Poor water quality leads to fungal infections affecting gills. A species-appropriate setup requires a chiller, careful pH management, and appropriate filtration. Given wild axolotl critical endangerment, captive breeding programs also have conservation value — another reason to support welfare-positive captive management.
