Chicken stunning failure is a significant but underacknowledged welfare problem in commercial poultry slaughter. Even low failure rates at the scale of global chicken production translate to enormous numbers of birds experiencing conscious neck cutting. Water bath systems are most vulnerable because birds that raise their heads miss the water and receive no stunning. Controlled atmosphere systems — using gas mixtures — avoid this failure mode by stunning birds before handling. Monitoring systems using neck cut blood flow patterns can detect stunning failures, enabling corrective action. The scale of this welfare harm makes improved stunning methods a high-priority welfare intervention.
