Behavioral medications play an important but underutilized role in managing anxiety disorders in dogs that significantly impair quality of life.
Dog anxiety disorders represent a major and underaddressed welfare problem. Chronically anxious dogs live in a state of persistent stress that affects physical health, social relationships, and quality of life. Despite the availability of effective medications and the clear welfare imperative, many owners and even veterinarians are reluctant to use pharmacological support. Behavioral modification alone is often insufficient for severe anxiety. A collaborative approach involving veterinary behavioral assessment, appropriate medication, and evidence-based training provides the best welfare outcomes for anxious dogs.
