Scent work represents an underutilized but highly welfare-positive activity for companion dogs. Dogs evolved primarily as olfactory animals — their brains are dominated by scent processing. Activities that allow extended olfactory engagement, like nose work and tracking, provide mental stimulation that physical exercise alone cannot replace. Research shows that dogs completing scent work tasks show optimistic cognitive bias — an indicator of positive emotional state. The activity is accessible to elderly, physically limited, or anxious dogs for whom vigorous exercise is difficult.
