Early maternal separation is a welfare compromise inherent to dairy production that applies to goats as fully as to cattle. Goats are strongly bonded social animals, and separation causes vocalizations, searching behavior, and physiological stress indicators in both mother and kid. The welfare harm is real and measurable. Extended contact systems that allow some bonding before gradual separation reduce the acute welfare impact. The fate of male kids — who do not produce milk — is an underemphasized welfare issue; historically most were killed as neonates, and integrating male kid welfare into whole-system assessment is an important frontier.
