Non-invasive monitoring technology represents a welfare improvement for wildlife that is simultaneously a scientific advancement. Traditional wildlife research involving capture, handling, and tagging carries real welfare costs — capture myopathy, anesthesia risk, injury from restraint, and post-release behavioral disruption. Camera traps, eDNA, drone observation, and fecal analysis gather comparable or superior data in many cases without these costs. The shift toward non-invasive methods is driven both by welfare concern and by recognition that minimally disturbed animals provide more ecologically valid behavioral data. Supporting institutions and funding agencies that prioritize non-invasive methods advances both animal welfare and wildlife science quality.
