Capybaras have become internet sensations and increasingly popular exotic pets, but their welfare needs are extremely difficult to meet in typical captive settings. They are profoundly social animals requiring at minimum one companion, and ideally a group. They must have access to sufficient water to swim — a shallow paddling pool is inadequate. They require specialized diet, veterinary care from practitioners experienced with the species, and warm climate or climate-controlled housing. The combination of social, environmental, and specialized care requirements makes most private capybara ownership a welfare failure. The cuteness that drives demand for them as pets is not matched by capacity to meet their needs in most households.
