Firework phobia causes genuine acute suffering in millions of dogs during holiday periods when fireworks are most common. The trembling, hiding, destructive behavior, and attempted escape of severely phobic dogs reflect real fear and panic. Many owners manage the problem by confining their dog or hoping they will habituate, neither of which addresses the underlying anxiety. Evidence-based treatment combines desensitization to recorded sounds, counterconditioning to create positive associations, and medication when needed for acute events and to enable behavioral therapy. Early intervention before fear escalates to severe phobia is more effective than treating established phobia.
