Dolphin captivity represents one of the most contentious welfare issues in zoo and aquarium management. Dolphins are highly intelligent, acoustically complex, socially intricate animals whose natural behaviors are profoundly constrained by captivity. The acoustic environment of tanks reverberates continuously, disrupting the sophisticated echolocation and communication systems on which dolphins depend. Social structures cannot replicate natural community dynamics. While captive cetacean welfare has improved compared to historic standards, the fundamental mismatch between dolphin behavioral ecology and achievable captive conditions suggests most facilities cannot meet these animals welfare needs.
