Farmed Animal Positive Emotions: Beyond Absence of Suffering

Animal welfare science increasingly focuses on enabling positive emotional states in farmed animals, not just preventing negative ones, representing a fundamental shift in how welfare is conceived.

Key Facts

Welfare Considerations

The shift from preventing negative states to actively promoting positive ones represents a maturation of animal welfare science. A life without obvious suffering but also without pleasure, engagement, and positive social experience is not a good life. High-welfare farming now aims to enable animals to experience positive emotions through social bonding, play, exploration, and successful foraging. Measuring these positive states is more challenging than measuring disease and injury, but validated tools including judgment bias testing and behavioral sampling make it increasingly tractable.
