Kennel club breed standards that specify extreme physical characteristics create dogs with lifelong health problems, and reform efforts are making progress.
Breed standard reform is gradually addressing some of the most egregious welfare consequences of conformation-focused breeding. Progress has been driven by veterinary advocacy, insurance data demonstrating health cost differences, and consumer education about welfare implications of extreme features. The challenge is that demand for brachycephalic breeds with extreme features remains high despite welfare concerns, limiting the effectiveness of supply-side interventions. Consumer education that changes aesthetic preferences toward healthier conformations addresses the demand side of the welfare equation more fundamentally.
