Tilapia is one of the most farmed fish globally, yet welfare standards for this species remain poorly developed compared to salmon.
Tilapia welfare has received far less research attention than salmon or shrimp, yet the scale of production means that welfare improvements could benefit hundreds of millions of fish. Evidence indicates tilapia experience pain and stress, and that high-density pond culture without adequate water quality management causes chronic suffering. Developing species-specific welfare standards for tilapia is an important frontier for aquaculture reform.
