Cheetahs are among the most difficult wild cats to provide adequate welfare for in captivity. Their extraordinary physiological adaptations for speed — lightweight frame, enlarged heart and lungs, specialized limbs — require daily high-speed running for health maintenance. Without adequate exercise space, captive cheetahs develop high rates of stress-related gastric disease and psychological abnormalities. Facilities keeping cheetahs have an obligation to provide meaningful exercise opportunities, behavioral enrichment, and social housing in compatible groupings to approach acceptable welfare outcomes.
