Temperate and sub-Antarctic penguins kept in warm climates without adequate cooling suffer thermal stress that affects health and behavior. Social species isolated or housed in very small groups show elevated stress indicators and stereotypic behavior. Foot problems from unnatural substrates — smooth concrete rather than rocky or sandy terrain — cause chronic pain.
