Recirculating aquaculture systems represent a significant technological advance for fish welfare. By fully controlling the aquatic environment, RAS eliminates many of the welfare problems of conventional aquaculture: sea lice exposure, environmental disease pressure, temperature fluctuations, and predator encounters. Water quality can be maintained at optimal levels for the species being farmed, and stocking densities can be adjusted for welfare rather than being constrained by environmental limitations. The higher capital and energy costs of RAS are the primary barrier to wider adoption, but as costs decline and environmental regulations tighten, RAS represents a more humane production future for farmed fish.
