Welfare Considerations

Carp aquaculture represents the largest single category of farmed fish welfare, yet receives almost no formal welfare attention. The scale is staggering — tens of billions of individual animals farmed annually in systems with essentially no welfare framework. While traditional polyculture systems have lower stocking densities than intensive salmonid farming, welfare problems including disease pressure, poor water quality in some operations, and inhumane handling and slaughter practices remain widespread. Developing basic welfare standards for carp farming — starting with water quality thresholds and humane slaughter requirements — would have an enormous impact given the scale of production.
