From cultivated meat to precision fermentation and AI welfare monitoring, emerging technologies offer transformative opportunities for animal welfare improvement.
The future of animal welfare is partly technological. Cultivated meat and precision fermentation, if they achieve price parity and consumer acceptance, could eliminate the need for the vast majority of farm animal slaughter — a transformative welfare outcome. AI monitoring systems that detect welfare problems in real time could dramatically improve farm and zoo animal welfare through earlier intervention. The challenge is ensuring that technology development is guided by welfare goals rather than productivity goals alone, and that access to welfare-improving technology is not limited by economic barriers. Strategic investment in welfare-positive technologies is one of the highest-leverage contributions to animal welfare at scale.
