Dental disease represents a largely invisible source of chronic suffering in companion animals. Because animals continue eating even with significant dental pain, owners often fail to recognize the problem until it is severe. The welfare impact of untreated dental disease — persistent pain affecting mood, behavior, and quality of life — is substantial and under-recognized by the veterinary and companion animal industries. Improving owner education, expanding access to affordable dental care, and promoting preventive home care are essential components of comprehensive companion animal welfare.
