The traditional boundary for moral consideration — vertebrates with complex nervous systems — is increasingly challenged by evidence of sophisticated information processing in invertebrates. If creatures like bees, crabs, and cephalopods have meaningful capacity for suffering, then current welfare frameworks ignore the largest portion of animal life on earth. Research-driven expansion of welfare consideration to invertebrates would not require certainty about invertebrate consciousness but only proportionate caution under conditions of significant uncertainty.
