Growing evidence for cephalopod sentience has prompted regulatory reforms including EU recognition of octopuses, squids, and cuttlefish as protected research animals.
Cephalopods represent a remarkable case of convergent evolution of complex cognition in an invertebrate lineage. The scientific case for their capacity to experience pain and suffering is now compelling enough to have driven regulatory change across multiple jurisdictions. Laboratory use of cephalopods must now apply the same 3Rs framework — replacement, reduction, and refinement — used for vertebrates under EU law. This includes anesthesia for surgical procedures, environmental enrichment during holding, and justification of numbers used. The challenge ahead is extending similar protections globally and resolving outstanding questions about the nature and depth of cephalopod experience.
