Mechanical systems impose handling stress. Cleaner fish — wrasse and lumpsucker deployed to eat lice — face high mortality rates due to inadequate husbandry knowledge and disease in sea pens. Integrated pest management approaches combining prevention, monitoring, and targeted treatment represent the current best welfare practice.
