Rabbits are the third most popular companion animal in many countries but among the most poorly understood, with welfare needs frequently unmet in standard housing.
The welfare gap between rabbit needs and typical provision is among the most significant in companion animal keeping. The small hutch kept outdoors has been standard for generations despite being wholly inadequate for an animal with complex social, spatial, and behavioral needs. Rabbits require daily exercise in a minimum area of 3m x 2m in addition to their housing, constant companionship with a neutered bonded partner, hay as the primary dietary component, and regular veterinary care including vaccination. Their natural tendency to conceal illness means owners must learn species-specific behavioral indicators and provide proactive preventive care.
