Heartworm disease is an almost entirely preventable welfare problem. The suffering associated with established infection — progressive exercise intolerance, coughing, heart failure, and death — represents a significant welfare burden that monthly preventive medication essentially eliminates. Yet substantial proportions of dogs in endemic areas remain unprotected, either due to owner unawareness, cost barriers, or inconsistent administration. Access to veterinary care and preventive medication is not equitably distributed — community programs providing subsidized prevention in underserved areas protect both individual dogs and reduce transmission pressure for all dogs in the region. Heartworm prevention is one of the clearest examples of how routine, affordable veterinary care directly prevents animal suffering.
