Canine cognitive dysfunction represents a significant welfare concern that is frequently normalized as simply getting old rather than recognized as a treatable condition. Dogs with cognitive dysfunction experience genuine confusion — disorientation in familiar environments, failure to recognize family members, and disrupted sleep cycles cause distress that owners can prevent or reduce. The welfare cost of untreated cognitive dysfunction is substantial: anxious, confused dogs may be less likely to receive adequate exercise and social contact as owners misinterpret their behavior, creating a spiral of declining welfare. Early recognition and management — including environmental modification, dietary support, mental stimulation programs, and where appropriate, veterinary medication — can meaningfully improve quality of life in affected dogs.
