Pangasius occupy a complex welfare and sustainability position. Their physiological tolerance for crowded, oxygen-depleted conditions means they can survive production environments that would be fatal to more sensitive species, but tolerance of poor conditions does not equal absence of welfare impact. Research on pangasius stress responses shows elevated cortisol under crowded conditions, behavioral changes associated with water quality degradation, and pain responses to noxious stimuli consistent with other bony fish. The affordability of pangasius makes it a critical protein source for millions of consumers, creating genuine tension between welfare improvement goals and food security considerations. Certification programs provide some quality assurance, but coverage of the industry remains low.
