Microchipping is a rare welfare intervention that is simultaneously simple, inexpensive, permanent, and highly effective. The welfare cost of failing to microchip a companion animal — lost animals dying in shelters whose owners would desperately want them back — is preventable at minimal expense. Yet substantial proportions of companion animals in many countries remain unidentified. The reunification statistics are striking: microchipped cats are more than 20 times more likely to be returned to their owners from shelters than non-microchipped cats. Mandatory microchipping programs in the UK and elsewhere have demonstrated that legal requirements dramatically increase uptake without undue burden on owners. The single greatest barrier is not cost or availability but awareness and prioritization.
