Wolverines represent one of the most difficult zoo welfare challenges because their wild lifestyle is defined by solitary ranging across enormous territories. No zoo enclosure can replicate the scale of wild wolverine home ranges, making behavioral welfare dependent on maximally complex three-dimensional environments with extensive digging substrate, climbing structures, caching opportunities, temperature-controlled zones, and rotational access to different habitat sections. Facilities housing wolverines must commit to ongoing behavioral monitoring and enrichment program revision to minimize stereotypies and maintain positive affective states.
