Play behavior in pigs is more than a behavioral curiosity — it is a welfare indicator with practical diagnostic value. Pigs in good welfare play; pigs in poor welfare do not. This gives farmers, welfare inspectors, and researchers a visible, observable proxy for the affective states of a species whose inner life is otherwise difficult to assess from the outside. Building farm systems that support pig play requires addressing the fundamental barriers: space to run and tumble, social groups of appropriate size, enrichment materials that provide genuine novelty and manipulation opportunity, and freedom from chronic pain, disease, and thermal stress. These are the conditions under which pigs thrive.
