Rainbow trout is one of the most farmed fish species globally — their welfare needs and the improvements achievable in aquaculture systems.
Farmed trout occupy an important position in the fish welfare debate because they are among the best-studied fish species and the evidence for their capacity for pain-relevant experience is strong. Rainbow trout show classic pain responses including protective behaviors, avoidance learning, and physiological stress markers after noxious stimulation. This evidence base, combined with the scale of trout farming globally, makes welfare improvements in trout aquaculture a high priority. The interventions are known: appropriate stocking density, water quality management, environmental enrichment, and pre-slaughter stunning. What is lacking is regulatory requirement and consumer demand to drive their implementation.
