Dairy goat kid welfare follows a painful pattern familiar from dairy cattle: maternal bonds formed rapidly after birth are severed prematurely in the interests of milk production, male offspring are treated as waste products, and routine painful procedures are performed without adequate analgesia. Each of these practices has an evidence-based welfare alternative: extended suckling, welfare-positive management of male kids, and mandatory analgesia for disbudding. The smaller scale of goat dairy compared to cattle farming does not diminish the welfare obligations it creates — suffering at any scale is morally significant.
