Pangasius (basa/swai) is one of the most widely consumed farmed fish globally — welfare considerations in intensive pangasius aquaculture.
Pangasius welfare is complicated by the species physiological hardiness, which has been interpreted as permission for welfare compromise rather than as resilience that should be protected. Fish that can tolerate low oxygen conditions do not thrive in them — they merely survive, at reduced welfare and with suppressed immune function. The extensive antibiotic use documented in pangasius farming is a downstream consequence of welfare-compromising density and management conditions. Genuine welfare standards for pangasius would establish density limits appropriate for positive welfare rather than mere survival, require monitoring of stress indicators, and mandate pre-slaughter stunning in processing facilities.
