Welfare Considerations

Body condition is the most visible single welfare indicator for companion dogs, encoding both the adequacy of nutrition and the chronic disease burden that excess weight creates. The 55% overweight prevalence is a welfare emergency that affects millions of dogs through shortened lifespans, chronic musculoskeletal pain, reduced mobility, and compromised quality of life. Yet it is almost entirely preventable through accurate feeding, regular monitoring, and veterinary guidance on appropriate caloric intake for individual animals. The primary barrier is owner perception — most cannot identify overweight body condition in their own dogs, normalizing a state that is causing chronic harm. Regular BCS education at veterinary visits and by veterinary staff is one of the highest-value welfare interventions available.
