Welfare Considerations

Companion bird welfare is widely underestimated by owners who may provide food and water but not flight space, social companions, or the environmental complexity that bird behavioral systems require. The small budgerigar in a typical pet store cage cannot extend its wings, cannot fly, and may live alone despite being a flock species. These are not acceptable welfare conditions for any vertebrate, yet they are normalized by a pet industry that sells species with substantial needs in packages that convey ease. Good companion bird welfare requires honest acceptance of what birds need: flight space, social contact, foraging opportunity, and regular veterinary assessment by someone familiar with avian medicine.

What You Can Do

Provide the largest possible cage — at minimum one that allows full wing extension in all directions and horizontal flight
House budgerigars and cockatiels with compatible companions unless providing many hours of daily human social contact
Offer foraging enrichment that distributes food throughout the cage to encourage movement and behavioral engagement
Feed a balanced diet rather than seed-only diets that cause nutritional deficiency and obesity
Find an avian veterinarian before illness occurs — avian-experienced vets are less common than cat and dog specialists
Monitor for behavioral and feather changes that may indicate stress or nutritional problems
