How to distinguish genuine wildlife sanctuaries from commercial operations using sanctuary language, and the accreditation systems that provide quality assurance.
Sanctuary accreditation is a consumer and donor protection tool that is also an animal welfare protection tool. When visitors and donors cannot distinguish genuine from pseudo-sanctuaries, resources flow toward operations that exploit animals commercially under conservation language. GFAS accreditation and equivalent processes provide the verification that neither marketing language nor mission statements can supply. The animals in pseudo-sanctuaries bear the welfare costs of the distinction: they are not cared for as lifetime residents but as commercial assets whose value depends on their manipulability and handling tolerance, creating permanent incentives for welfare compromise.
