Feral pigeons are ubiquitous urban birds often managed as pests — the welfare dimensions of urban pigeon control methods.
Urban pigeon welfare sits at an intersection familiar from other human-wildlife conflicts: a species whose population is sustained by human behavior (food provision), managed through methods that cause welfare harm (poisoning, shooting, netting) that are also ineffective for long-term population control. The welfare-effective solution — reducing food provision combined with contraceptive management — requires community coordination and sustained commitment that many councils resist in favor of short-term lethal methods that are both crueler and less effective. Advocates for pigeon welfare must make both the welfare and the effectiveness case simultaneously to overcome the cultural assumption that lethal control is the only practical option.
