Welfare Considerations

Sea lice welfare in salmon farming is a double welfare problem: the infestation itself causes progressive tissue damage and physiological stress, while the treatments required to control infestations are themselves acute stressors. Salmon experiencing heavy sea lice infestations are in chronic discomfort from tissue damage and immune activation. Treatment crowding and pump transfer stress adds acute welfare events on top of chronic lice stress. The welfare resolution requires preventing infestations through enclosed containment systems or dramatically effective biological controls — eliminating the welfare cost of both infestation and treatment rather than cycling between them.
