Welfare Considerations

Beef cattle welfare involves complex trade-offs between production systems that each have different welfare strengths and weaknesses. Feedlot systems concentrate welfare problems including disease risk, heat stress, and muddy conditions, but also concentrate veterinary access and monitoring. Grass-fed systems provide behavioral freedom and appropriate forage but may provide less veterinary attention and have higher parasite burdens. Neither system is inherently welfare-superior — both can be managed well or poorly. The welfare interventions with the most impact across all systems are the same: pain management for routine procedures, disease monitoring and prompt treatment, appropriate stocking density, and humane transport and slaughter.
