Rabbits are among the most misunderstood companion animals in terms of their true welfare needs. The image of a rabbit in a small backyard hutch persists in culture despite overwhelming evidence that such housing causes chronic suffering. Rabbits are active animals with a natural need to run, jump, and exhibit complex locomotory behaviors. Confinement suppresses these behaviors, causes muscle atrophy, and leads to psychological deterioration. Companion rabbits also require a bonded companion — solitary living causes chronic stress.
